This is about the employee E who is there in every company, organization, unit, department irrespective of the region or location or creed the situation and the story remains the same bcoz it has remained the same from ages and it is planned to remain the same for ages to come.
The employee 'E' joined the company C and worked hard. He was intelligent but not smart and in this case he also happened to be a male employee which cheats him off the innumerable advantages of being a women in an organization. The employee E was good at his scores, he met & exceeded the parameters set by his damagement sorry management and he was always on time and never hesitated to extend the shift or do a doubt shift and stay in the office without the extra pay. He never got paid by the hour but only once in a month and got an annual hike which was far less than the hikes gotten by oil, gas, food or rent but nonetheless unfortunately he was good at what he did and he thus liked what he did because he was always manipulated to feel that he is appreciated and recognized by no good certificates of appreciation or badges or some goodies like socks or a tea cup with his company C's logo on it and he was told it is not important what you are getting as a token of appreciation but it is the appreciation which is important. Employee C stayed in the same company doing the same kind of job for years but his friends who were smart first and intelligent later moved out of the company and some even faked their job role and pay so that they get a much better deal in another company D and many of them came back to the same company C and got a much greater pay and job role in the same company C where the employee E is still wondering what is he doing wrong because he is nearing his middle age fast with no wheels to ride, never been on a vacation, cant afford a girlfriend or a prostitute but uses his left and right hand as his girlfriends every weekend when his friends are too busy in exchanging the numbers of girls that they have been with in a club nearby.
Employee E realized that he should not have worked hard or oeverachieved the parameters or targets set by the management because he is setting a new standard and that is a threatening situation not just for him but for others as well. He soon realized that there are many who can do better than him but choose not to since they do not want to pass a wrong message to the management that they are underutilized or their work is too easy or more work and pressure should be given to these employees. This employee E was told that unless a team misses on few parameters set by the management for performance measurement it will be considered that the team is overstaffed and the job cuts might happen in that team but the employee E was addicted to meeting these parameters he coulnt do what others did even after he tried so much. After a long time when his own friends who went out and came back in the company started to show off their expensive gadgets, their new car, bike, house, wife, kids and what not this employee E decided to try out. Since E had not given any interview in years he was faced with difficulty of clearing interviews but many saw his talent is special in the field that he is working but did not hire him because his pay was far lower than his tenure and talent and to top that his pay and job role was too low than the tenure that he has. HR told to his face that they cannot hire him for 2 reasons. His pay and position are far lower than the market standards compared to his talent, experience and tenure which suggests that he either has performance issue in his old company C or he had some issues with the management in his last company C and both of these are not expected from any candidate that they hire. He was always made aware of that fact that staying in the same organization for a long time is not seen as a stability but it is seen as his inability to get a job outside due to lack of talent of courage. Stuck with the lightning of the truth he decided to try again and he also thought of faking his pay and even his position to match his talent, tenure and experience.
The Ray of hope
Finally one day a major tech company called EC2 hired him because they thought that he is a definite bargain when they compare his salary to tenure & talent. He was happy and told his friends and his friendly supervisors too and they were happy for him too. The position offered was also one of a kind. He would get to travel abroad and make his parents proud too. He can finally think of taking care of his parents and ask them to come live with him. Unfortunately, as informed earlier the employee E was talented or intelligent but not smart enough. one day one of his manager J promised a promiseland and wonderland if he stayed in the company and reject the EC2 offer(which was nearly 3 times of his current pay) and he was convinced that his management really likes him and he believed in their verbal promise and stayed, stayed, stayed and stayed but again for the years to come nothing happened. He was still in the same place doing the same thing and getting the same thing which compared to the cost of living was almost nothing. He knew that he was deceived but whom to blame that is what they are paid for and that is why they are made a boss of people like him who are not good at what they are good at and thus their job is more rewarding even though it is he the employee E who gets the actual revenue for the company.
One day out of frustration he fought with the management and finally one day he was moved into a department which everyone thought of as a dream department when it comes to learning and technical knowledge that one could get in this IT world and he was happy too. He learnt all he could, he invested most of his pay for his computer and its hardware so that he can learn and get himself updated to suit the new job. He chose to stay at home and pretend not at home to his friends on weekends so that he can study but all this was again proved useless when he started to realize that he might have been hired because he was too cheap(when you compare his pay to his talent or output that he can give) but not only because he is really worthy of the job. He started to pity himself and started to feel worthless. It had become a trend that employees in the company go out and get a better job and package and the company C use to give them a counter offer to retain them and the employee E decided to do that too with the consent of a manager C in the management. He decided to try out again for a company VM and got through the interview finally but unfortunately even after they offering a staggering 60% hike on this current salary it was far less than the market standard but their company policy couldnt allow them to offer more than 100% hike to the position or job role for which he has applied for. Finally thinking of the change that he is going to get and the value of the experience of the company VM has in the market he decided to think it over. He did inform the manager C but now he started to say that he has to resign and go and they cannot offer him a counter offer.
Employee E felt really bad and was puzzled why someone like him who has done so much for the company, who has stayed and slept at office for days during city strikes to make sure he wont miss the work the next day, someone who use to skip a break every day to meet the parameters, someone who use to mentor the new comers who later overstepped him in their career, someone who has done 2, 3 peoples work then there was a shortage of workforce, someone who has come to office on his week offs for months has to face this kind of insult. He wanted to find out and went to a higher up and put forth his concern. His voice was heard and he was told that it will be looked into but his friends advised him not to stay in the company since a 6 month stay at the company VM is worth 5 times than 3 year stay in the company C because company C hires ex employees of the company VM and EC2 with a lot higher price tag than that of any company and people who usually want to double or triple their package go to company VM or EC2 from company C and comeback after 6 month to get a higher pay and they gave him some live examples of their friends in the same company who have doubled or tripled their salary within a year. In the mean time he got a once in a lifetime offer where his friends brother has a very high position in a prestigious company G in singapore and they will have opening for his kind of job after 6 to 8 months and his friend promised to put a word to his brother to make this happen. employee E was very happy that finally everything was going green and great. He did not wanted to be cheated like the way he was cheated earlier 2 years ago where if he had accepted the offer from EC2 he would have been the most successful and well settled guy among all of his friends and colleagues. He did not want to give this up but once again his naiveness and false notion of loyalty and his undersmart but talented brain did not know the difference between con, cunning and kind. He was conned once again stating that his profile and resume will be more valued than anyone in the market if he stays in the same company C instead of going to the company VM and his pricetag will be higher than any of his friends or colleagues. They even promised that they will promote and sponsor his learning and certificates related to his field just like the company VM does. They offered him a counter offer and he stayed against the good advices of his family and friends.
It has been years now and he is still one of the underpaid and undervalued employee in his department. He knows for a fact that people of lower job grades earn a log higher than him at any given point of the day where he has to update himself of many things only to earn the same thing. He did not go to singapore nor did his price tag improved. Company C indirectly denied his certification or learning as promised by delaying it indefinitely.
Learning: No one can fool you unless foolishness exists in you. They only told him what he wanted to hear. They only exploited him because he had a weakness. He knew that the problem wasnt them, the problem wasnt the company but it was him. He said to himself "You are the reason for your failure, You are where you are because of what you are".
